The FA just released statement. Season null and void. Life is more important than football at the moment. But do feel for the club and Graham for such a great season. Just hope everyone sticks together. We are a great family club . Up the Dannies

i feel sad for stamford players and manager and fans. the best team we have had for years, and after 8 months of hard work and with only 6 weeks left of the season to be robbed of promotion at such a late stage. i hope the players stick together for next season.

We all know that lives are more important. But general life still happens in the background; it has to. Making this decision isn't helping save lives or otherwise (it's not like we're still playing games), so i don't see an issue with it being debated personally. I think it's a terrible decision, taken far too early. The season is more than 3 quarters done, so just expunging it and voiding it is bizarre. They won't do this in the Premier League or football league, so how can they justify it at our level? The pyramid will be scewed. Also, do the professional 19/20 leagues carry on into October, whilst we're a quarter of the way through 20/21?! It should have been the same decision across all leagues. What a shame.

They wouldn’t make the professional leagues null and void because think of all the lawsuits they’d get. They’ve palmed off non league because they probably think nobody down here is big enough to make a fuss. I’ve learnt to expect nothing less from the FA

You've not been robbed of anything. Only the league winner and playoff winner are promoted.
You are neither I'm afraid.

Lots of thoughts floating around regarding the decision. It has to be rubber stamped at FA council meeting this week. 50 clubs supposedly registered their dissappment in the quick decision. Also a petition going around with over 3000 already on it. The country is still in shock with what's happening with the virus and fully focused on getting out of it. Why oh why has this decision been made so quick. It wasn't needed yet. I would think Graham and most non league managers would play 3games a wk (yes tough) but sooner finish the season off properly . Just hope common sense prevails. FA listen to grassroots clubs and fans. of course they'll be winners and losers but let the football do the talking.

In competitive sport there are winners and there are losers. The winners are the most skilful, the fittest, the strongest. The losers are those who perform badly. In football the team that wins a league has played best over the length of the season and usually is promoted to the next level. The teams that play worst over the season secure the fewest points and are relegated.
In a normal season, the team that wins a league has won the most points over the games played in that league over the full season. The teams that are relegated have won the fewest. This is not a normal season but the same principles of who wins and who loses at the end of the season should apply. For me, all leagues have to finish now. It is unrealistic to think that it will be possible to resume much before pre season for the 20/21 season. That means the leagues are concluded now not assumed never to have happened. The teams who have the highest points per game from the games they have played win their leagues. Those who have won fewest points per game played are relegated.
Readjusting the league standings based on points won per game rewards the successful teams. Declaring leagues null and void rewards the failing teams by allowing them to avoid the relegation their performance over the season to date deserves.
As a life long Manchester City supporter I know Liverpool will then be declared Premier League champions. Rightly so – they are clearly the best team in the league.

Don't even think the 2020/21 season should be getting talked about. Why are we even thinking about a season that hasn't even started yet over one that is 75% complete. Dean is absolutely right, it's a terrible decision coupled with the hastiness of it all. You are right in that there are bigger issues right now, but for a lot of people football is very important and a huge aspect of their lives, especially in the big working class cities; so for a lot of people having football back in their lives is something to look forward to. Theres no way they will void the higher leagues, there will be certain mayhem if they do, but whatever they do it surely has to be consistent across the whole English football system, not just the top 4 leagues.

League positions must stand from premiership to level 7 non league a conclusion must be made to supporters, management and players cricket has the Duckworth plan thanks to the FA Stamford suffer again.this could happen again next season and beyond. My thoughts to all virus cases, hospital staff, supermarket workers etc remember the British spirit has won us many battles and wars and always will.

Well let’s hope that the FA ratification changes the decision. It needs to be a consistent approach across all of football. If they voided the Premier League/ EFL, there would be a) legal reproaches and b) riots across Liverpool, Leeds etc. Why should we be treated differently? I noticed over the weekend that some clubs are already mathematically champions (South Shields / Guernsey I think), yet their results are now void. It’s just unbelievable.
Oh and why this Leeds v Man U spat has happened on here, I’ll never know

A long time no appear on this board! Hope you are all well in particular the regulars I used to see on here like Dean and H and 'fatoldgit'
My GTFC friend has given me most of this info but it is something we had been chatting about ever since the issue looked like cropping up.
South Shields are the good case in points. They're gaining a lot of public sympathy and seem to be at the forefront of the campaign. They've not won the league yet but have a 12 point lead. However....
although 21 points behind Morpeth still have 6 games in hand on Shields and a third of their season to play. Morpeth are on a run of form with 17 points in 7 games, a run taken forward that would see them within 6 points of Shields. 9 of Morpeth's 15 remaining games are at home. They have the best home form in the division and...they still have Shields to play at home. In Jan/Feb Shields went on a run of 6 points in 6 games. A similar return to that form alongside Morpeth continuing on their curve would throw the league wide open.
Of course this is all surmising but that is the point and why we love football. This morning I found myself listening to the radio commentary of the 2005 Champions League final. AC Milan 3 Liverpool 0. Game over. But it wasn't. We don't end football matches on boxing styles knockouts or towels being thrown in. We've all been to games where a team has been dominant and suddenly seen a 1 or 2 goal lead overturned in the last 5 minutes...out of nowhere, against all sense...it happens. It happens in games and it happens in leagues too...teams 'blow up' Tamworth being one example I remember...and teams come out of nowhere...going way way back I remember Leicester Utd doing it in the Southern League.
The problem of Points Per Game is that it cannot take into account home games versus away games, weather, injuries, current form. In short it just passes over the unpredictability of football. Barrow may be top of the NL but they've still to travel to Harrogate.
I do feel for teams who have 'secured' promotion but this is totally unprecedented. Whatever route is taken is going to be seen as unfair by a few clubs and will benefit a few. The majority, apart from the loss of income will just be glad to press restart.
Of course I'm going to say this as this benefits Grantham as it stands but I do understand why the decision was made. In terms of clubs saying they were not consulted I think I'm right in saying GTFC had already been proactive and made their views known...other clubs could have done the same, they don't have to just sit and wait for the FA before they respond.
A side issue on the matter of South Shields is the comments from their chairman about the money they've spent. When you read between the lines what you see is the running of a club with unsustainable expenditure for the level they are at. Is it a fair competition when one club over spends by huge sums while another sticks to a sustainable budget. I think I read on the Kings Lynn forum this week that over two season they had benefitted from Directors and company loans amounting to £495,000. That is debt, pure and simple.
Like it or not the Premier league will be treated differently due to the vast sums involved in terms of sponsorship...an added issue being to do with shirt sponsorships coming into force in June...and this is big big business.
And of course you will here the 'there are more important things' argument. Well of course there are, no one is doubting that. We've had a lot of cases down here and I've a friend who has been in lockdown in her home town of Bergamo for 5 weeks and describing it as a war zone. But stuff goes on. If you were burgled you would still expect to report it to police, insurance to do their bit and hopefully, justice if the perpetrator was caught. So the machinations of society still have to function and work. This is a complex one but, for me, in essence, to preserve the integrity of football, PPG or assumptions on promotion and relegation cannot be enforced, I Can't see any option but to null and void it.

Post by Dean on Mar 29, 2020 20:24:42 GMT
great to hear from you GTFC. Hope you’re ok and things are good for you now. I totally get what you’re saying about PPG and issues surrounding it. We’re also on form, and with Leek to play here, we could also say that it wouldn’t be fair to award the league to Leek. Of course games and leagues change in the latter stages, and I totally get that. but surely having some promotion and relegation is better than just voiding it all?! Or why not extend the season so it comes to a finish, and then have a reduced season next year? (When everyone knows and accepts the revised rules, maybe just 19 games?)
I don’t see why our league should be treated differently to the Premier League. Yes, there is more money involved at that level, but surely what’s fair is fair. You can’t have us playing next season and the Prem Lge playing out 2019/2020. It would be a farce.

with a favourite niece living in Madrid, a son and grand-daughter working in health care and most of my generations classed as 'high risk' yes I think we should think that the virus is the most important issue but I struggle to cope with the emotions so try to think of other things as much as I can. On the sporting front lots of difficult choices for organisers/officials. On a personal note in my sport postponements have seemed the fairest solutions for the majority. They do however leave me with three marathons, a half marathon. a 10mile and 10k races in a six week period starting in mid September -I'll have to choose which to drop. This has got me thinking, the organisers think its going to be September before we get back to normal. If this is what happens then the current plan makes sense we just start the new season (leave out which level we are at and how its worked out). However if it drags on to say November/December we won't get 2020/2021 finish on time if we get a hard winter might just be time to play out this season. If (unlikely) all is well by mid/late April then we could have finished the season. Without a crystal ball how can the authorities make a decision now?

The fairest way for me is to postpone the season, and resume when possible. If the season finishes November 2020, then so be it.
The powers that be can then schedule a shortened 20/21 season with clear rules on what happens on an interrupted season so everyone knows where they stand.
If clubs fold before the current season ends, then follow the current rules regarding reprieves and allocation of promotion places.
If clubs fold before the new season then simply reprieve/promote as per current rules to fill the spaces.
On this basis, hopefully Grantham will stay up on merit and you will have the chance to win your league or playoff final.

Yep, exactly. This league should definitely finish, even if it's November. Then, if the FA don't want a reduced season next season, the other possibility is to start the new season on Jan 1st and have a calendar year season. You then do this for the next 2yrs and finish it in November 2022 to coincide with the 2022 World Cup.

How about this! This might sound daft, but I have been known to write 'daft things'.
We end this season now exactly has it stands - games played, points wise and league position wise.
We then try and temper the whole unfairness of this season.
By
Starting next season exactly where all clubs have finished this season - with the same points and positions in the league.
This way the teams at the top keep their advantage and have a chance to sustain it over the season.
The teams with a chance of play-offs have a chance to get there.
The teams in 'no mans land' can start with some encouragement on doing much better.
The teams at the bottom have another season to scrap their way from relegation.
Is this really as daft as I am? Just think about it, its definitely possible and about as fair as this ridiculous situation can get.
Your views please - and not on a postage stamp!
Great to see you back 'gtultra' with all that good logic. We have missed you.

Maybe league have thought about teams still paying contract players until season ended, which it is now whether statement
Trouble now with season done the approach of players start, few of the lads have had calls already for next season, that would not happen if season was suspended
