According to twitter, John Sands has left the club. I can't say i'm massively surprised. He didn't look fit, and with the team only scoring only 1 goal in the last 3 games, you can understand why GD made the decision. That hunt for a striker who can score 20 a season goes on..... When is Ricky Miller's contract at Vale expiring!? Can he come back?!

@gdrury71 I would like to say a massive thank you to john sands for his time with us. With the injury and all the travelling its just not worked out. Travel is causing the injury a problem so we didnt see the best of him. Hes a top lad and we as a club wish him all the best. More Johns been a pleasure to work with and i personal thank him for trying to play.

It is disappointing we never got to see the true John Sands in action but that seems to sum up our season really. Gregg Smith has left Tamworth today and it looks like Tommo is on his way out of Grantham possibly (him and Salty were both left out of their squad last night and Chris has subsequently moved to Matlock so who knows what's happening with BFT) Someone like Gregg would be unbelievable for the last few months of the season even if we possibly splash out as a major risk??? and could potentially reinvigorate a play off charge.
Looking ahead, in my opinion, currently the only position realistically feasible is the final play off position in 5th. Win our games in hand over the two teams below us (Lincoln and Frickley) and its the current top 11 challenging (think Morpeth and Brighouse are relatively safe but then between Sheffield, Ponte, Ossett, Tadcaster, Lboro, Belper, Marske, Cleethorpes and us). If we don't have that goalscorer element we will soon be saying goodbye to any hopes of the playoffs. 2 wins are needed in my opinion from the next 2 games playing lowly Gresley and Spalding. March is a crucial month for us with 4 home games against play off rival contenders in Tadcaster, Osset, Sheffield and Marske, with an away game at Pickering thrown in there. Those 4 home games will define our season in my opinion. Drop too many points and the play off chasing pack already forming will pull away too far for us to reasonably catch. At present I think its turning into a struggle but anything less than 3 wins out of those games and I think we may be looking at another season of step 4 football. However even if we aren't knowingly playing for anything come the final games of the season it'll be imperative to keep pushing on, who knows if some Sixth placed side could get dragged into the playoffs
I know I've bleated on about it on here that there's still time and Im aware there is but after some recent poor results and our run in and those games in march are going to be unbelievably crucial for our season. if we continue the goalscoring form that we currently show we will be clutching at straws I think. Cant stress enough how much I want proving wrong though, we just dont belong at this level and I dont think I can take more than 1 more season of it.

As you say, this next 6 weeks is massive. We need a good run, and we need it fast. I agree that we need promotion. There's still a feel good factor at the club currently, with generally reasonable attendances. If we get the next boost of promotion, we could go on and average 350-400 per game. The more people that come, the better atmosphere, the more people tell their pals etc etc. It's so important to go up. That said, i won't be deserting us if we stay at Step 4. Even if does mean we're playing Deeping Rangers next year!

Oh absolutely agree Dean. I will of course criticise the level we're at but for some reason following our little town side around the country ending up in towns ive never heard of is actually quite enjoyable and only god knows why I keep doing it.

The return of Greg Smith is good news. He has been an all-action presence all over the pitch, not just as a striker. Out of interest how many times has he joined the Daniels? I make it at least five times. Welcome back Greg.

Good to see Greg back. He could be just what we need. Looking forward to seeing him find the net on his 'debut' on Saturday.

Surprised there's not a bit more reaction on here. He's the striker most of us have been crying out for pretty much since he left. Hoping his goals fire us towards the play offs pretty sharpish

Couldn’t agree more, anon. Massive coup signing to get Greg. Will also put a few extra on the gate Saturday methinks too.

Well at least they club won’t have to go to the trouble of getting his bank details and inside leg measurements.

They may need to re-measure his waist though since last time....

Fantastic to get Gregg back, as previously mentioned it’s his all round work rate, not just in front of goal but helping out defensively. He’s scored plenty at step 2 in the last couple of seasons, I believe he’ll score over 15 for us before the end of the season.
We’ve got 13 games left and only 5 out of the 7 playoff winners actually getting promoted, we need to get as many points on the board as possible to make sure if we were to win the playoffs we were not one of the two with the lowest ppg.
Realistically we need to win 9 out of those 13, A tall order but with Gregg back certainly achievable.

Out of interest, how do you reckon we got him? If he was on a contract at Tamworth, i'm guessing he only would have joined us for a contract too.... Maybe Sands was on a contract too, and his leaving free'd up some cash?? I'm sure Gregg loves Stamford, but i don't think he'll have joined us out of love, let's be honest!

Mercury report said he "put pen to paper" whether that means signing a contract or simply signing the registration who knows. Big thing will be keeping him here next season too regardless of what happens at the end of this season.

Shrew makes a good point with the points return analysis. This season we've lost 9 games, thats the same number we lost all of last season. Hope isn't dead yet and if anyone can rectify our promotion charge its Gregg

Service resumed with Smith sent off on return so club won't have to worry about his wages for three games
