Well - I wasn't expecting that!
As we ploughed through the rain to the West Midlands my thoughts were of how difficult this game was going to be against a renowned cup fighting team. They had also had a decent start to the season, sitting in 7th place. And being in a league a level above us, in reality, all seemed impossible.
With injuries giving The Boss a difficult task in itself, the team could almost pick itself. And narrowed us down to 3 outfield subs.
In fact, it was almost intimidating watching their 6 outfield and 1 goalkeeper subs warming up before the teams entered the arena.
I need not have worried.
The sun had now come out as we looked across the pitch and adjacent cricket ground to the lovely old pavilion in what is a huge sporting amphitheatre. And the sun was certainly shining on our boys as straight from the kick-off we went for the jugular and dominated the game for the full 90 minutes. At first I thought we surely could not keep this up - but strangely my confidence was building from another source. A group of Stourbridge supporters had settled in a yard or so from us and having watched them all season were constantly nagging away between themselves about the inadequacy of several of the home players. And so it turned out, as Stourbridge had absolutely no answer to Graham's game plan. It seemed we were better, sharper and wanted it more than the homester's.
Graham had certainly done his home work after watching them the previous week.
Apart from a couple of routine saves, Danny was relatively safe, guarded by a back four who did not give anything away, held their line but also got up the wings and chipped in at set pieces. The midfield worked tirelessly and dominated and I'm sure the home players must have been surprised at our energy and enthusiasm to want that ball, Stourbridge were not allowed to create anything and were constantly harassed into bad judgement and mistakes. The lads up front worked their socks off and both wingers were on full metal today and gave their defence a horrible afternoon, resulting in one of their players being sent off late in the game, probably more from frustration than anger.
You notice I have not mentioned many names - our boss and goaly. That's because this was one of those days when we got a pure team performance an absolute delight to watch, and it was watched by an excellent attendance with many Stamford supporters amongst them who were there normal vociferous selves and cheered their heroes on. That was a display to remember.
And boy, don't it make the Mcdonalds/KFC taste much better on the way home - Mr Bee!
